Life versus Art – A Manifesto [well... a sort of vague direction]

Life Versus Art - Helen Aldous

So - I've been thinking a lot about my Blog recently and how to develop it.

It seems that for all my grand ideas, lists and sketchbook notes, life seems to get in the way of actually fulfilling them and this made me think.

I'm sure there are so many of us out there. Time-poor Artists who have a family to love and nurture. People who have other work commitments and responsibilities which have to come first. People who don't have the spare money to buy the luxury of time. People who fall into bed at the end of the day feeling they haven't had one minute for themselves. People who have the deep seated passion to create, be it painting, photography, sculpture or a myriad of other disciplines, but find that life in general makes it very difficult to keep going and get the new work done.

With this in mind I am going to rename my blog "Life versus Art" and hang a loose theme around it of squeezing the most amount of creativity from the least amount of time. I find that my life and my art have become closely intertwined as this is the only way I can find time to create within the structure of my day so it will reflect that balance [or lack of it]. It's so easy to let all your comittments eat away at your time until you just give up and stop all your creative output. If my Blog can poke just one person into keeping their spark of creativity alive it will be worth it.

So that's my mini manifesto and focus for the Blog. I hope it will help you [and me] to just keep creating, even if it's only 5 minutes a day.

The tragic joy of the slow cooker - Helen Aldous - Artist

Know what you mean: I haven't sung a note for 6 years (my last solo engagement was a 'Messiah' with Holmfirth Choral in about 2002). Simply didn't fit with family life at the time. Just started blogging in an attempy to make myself write something not work-related every few days. Easy enough to appear creative working for a city council, but harder to really be so! On the other hand there's creativity involved in helping children grow, isn't there?

Absolutely there is creativity involved in bringing up children. Its just a slow job

Blogs are such a good way of poking yourself to do something.

Nicely said Helen! You have inspired me today. You've poked me into creativity with your blog. Thanks!
